Welcome to Tanzania! Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our friendly KCTE team will greet you and transport you to your chosen accommodation in Moshi. Relax and enjoy your surroundings at one of the top-rated hotels as you prepare for the adventure ahead. This evening includes a pre-climb briefing where we'll discuss the journey, check your gear, and answer any questions you may have.
Day 1: Moshi to Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp
- Altitude: 1,600m to 2,850m
- Distance: 11km
- Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
- Habitat: Montane Forest
Your adventure begins! After breakfast in Moshi, we drive to the Umbwe Gate. Here, we commence our trek through the dense rainforest draped with hanging mosses and inhabited by colobus monkeys. The path is steep, providing a rigorous start to our climb. Our campsite for the night is at the Umbwe Cave, nestled among giant fig trees. Dinner and overnight at the camp.
Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp to Barranco Camp
- Altitude: 2,850m to 3,950m
- Distance: 6km
- Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
- Habitat: Heath
As we ascend sharply out of the forest zone into the heath, the trail becomes less steep and offers spectacular views of the mountain and its surroundings. The path grows steeper as we approach Barranco Camp. The camp is situated in a valley below the Breach and Great Barranco Wall, known for its dramatic volcanic cliffs and vibrant senecio forests. This day allows for great acclimatization and provides breathtaking sunset views.
Day 3: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
- Altitude: 3,950m to 3,995m
- Distance: 5km
- Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
Today features the climb of the famous Barranco Wall. This is not a technical wall but rather a steep and challenging scramble. From the top, you will have a magnificent view of Kilimanjaro's southern glaciers. The trail then winds up and down until reaching Karanga Camp. This day is crucial for acclimatization and you will have time to rest or explore the surrounding area in the afternoon.
Day 4: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
- Altitude: 3,995m to 4,673m
- Distance: 4km
- Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
Leaving Karanga, the trail intersects with the Mweka Route, which is the path used to descend on the final two days. As we continue to the Barafu Hut, the landscape becomes more barren and rugged. Tonight, we prepare for the summit night. Meals and overnight at Barafu Camp, where we rest and gather energy for the upcoming summit ascent.
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
- Altitude: 4,673m to 5,895m (and down to 3,100m)
- Distance: 5km ascent / 12km descent
- Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent / 4-6 hours descent
- Habitat: Arctic
We start around midnight to climb steeply upwards to the Summit glaciers. You will be climbing scree for 4 to 5 hours but rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise at Stella Point (5,756m). Another hour's walking brings us to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Here, you are standing on the highest point in Africa, free above the clouds, a truly life-changing experience! After the summit, we descend to the Mweka Camp, passing the beautiful Barafu Camp for a short rest.
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi
