Day 0: Arrival in Tanzania
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by a KCTE representative who will transport you to one of our partner hotels in Moshi, as listed here. Settle in, enjoy the local cuisine, and rest up for the upcoming adventure.
Day 1: Moshi – Umbwe Gate (1,800m) – Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850m)
- Elevation Gain: 1,050 meters
- Trekking Duration: 5-7 hours
- Distance: 11 km
After breakfast in Moshi, we drive to the Umbwe Gate. Here, our climb begins through the lush rainforest, vibrant with verdant trees and chirping birds. The path is steep, with the dense canopy occasionally opening up to stunning views. The first campsite, Umbwe Cave Camp, is located just beyond a large cave that was historically used as a shelter. This evening, as you rest beneath the thick forest canopy, the sounds of the forest create a natural lullaby.
Day 2: Umbwe Cave Camp – Barranco Camp (3,950m)
- Elevation Gain: 1,100 meters
- Trekking Duration: 4-6 hours
- Distance: 6 km
Trek from the Umbwe Cave Camp to the Barranco Camp, traversing a more challenging and steeper trail. The vegetation transitions from rainforest to moorland, offering panoramic views of the valley and the mountainous terrain ahead. As you approach Barranco Camp, the iconic Barranco Wall presents an imposing yet magnificent sight. The camp itself is one of the most scenic on Kilimanjaro, offering views of the Western Breach and the hanging glaciers.
Day 3: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp (3,995m)
- Elevation Gain: 45 meters
- Trekking Duration: 4-5 hours
- Distance: 5 km
Start your day conquering the Barranco Wall; an exhilarating scramble that leads you to the top where you'll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of Kilimanjaro's southern glaciers. The trail then winds up and down, crossing several streams before reaching Karanga Camp. This day is crucial for acclimatization and you'll have the afternoon to rest or explore the rugged surroundings.
Day 4: Karanga Camp – Barafu Camp (4,673m)
- Elevation Gain: 678 meters
- Trekking Duration: 4-5 hours
- Distance: 4 km
As you trek from Karanga to Barafu Camp, the landscape shifts dramatically to alpine desert. The trail steepens, and the air thins, making the hike more challenging but equally rewarding. Barafu Camp is situated on a barren ridge, offering unobstructed views of the summit. Rest early tonight, as you'll begin your summit attempt at midnight.
Day 5: Barafu Camp – Uhuru Peak (5,895m) – Mweka Camp (3,100m)
- Elevation Gain: 1,222 meters
- Descent: 2,795 meters
- Trekking Duration: 11-14 hours
- Distance: 17 km
Your summit bid starts at midnight, as you ascend under the stars. This is the most mentally and physically challenging part of the trek. The steep climb through heavy scree leads to Stella Point on the crater rim, and from here, it's a gradual climb to Uhuru Peak. At the summit, you stand atop the highest point in Africa, with the continent sprawled beneath you – a truly transformative experience. Afterward, descend to Mweka Camp for overnight, your heart full with triumph.
Day 6: Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate (1,640m) – Moshi
- Descent: 1,460 meters
- Trekking Duration: 3-4 hours
- Distance: 10 km
The descent continues through the lush forest. At Mweka Gate, you will receive your summit certificates, and a KCTE vehicle will take you back to your hotel in Moshi. Celebrate your achievement tonight with a farewell dinner hosted by KCTE.
