About The Trek

6-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb via Lemosho Route

A spectacular Kilimanjaro trekking adventure combining rainforest, open moorland, the Shira Plateau, alpine desert and the unforgettable summit of Africa.

The 6-Day Lemosho Route is one of the most scenic ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The route approaches the mountain from the west, beginning in a remote rainforest environment before crossing the spectacular Shira Plateau.

Compared with some of the shorter Kilimanjaro routes, Lemosho provides an exceptional variety of scenery. Trekkers experience lush rainforest, giant heather, open moorland, volcanic landscapes and high-altitude desert.

After crossing the Shira Plateau, the trail joins the southern circuit and continues toward Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp. This creates an important climb-high, sleep-low opportunity.

The route continues across the dramatic Barranco Wall and through the Karanga Valley before reaching Barafu Camp, the high camp used for the summit attempt.

The final challenge is the night ascent toward Stella Point and onward around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 metres.

Why Choose the Lemosho Route?

  • Spectacular western approach
  • Beautiful rainforest scenery
  • Remote and scenic beginning
  • Dramatic Shira Plateau
  • Excellent landscape diversity
  • Lava Tower acclimatization section
  • Famous Barranco Wall
  • High-altitude alpine desert
  • Memorable summit experience
Day-by-Day Trekking Plan

6-Day Lemosho Route Itinerary

Follow the complete 6-day Mount Kilimanjaro trekking itinerary from the western slopes of Kilimanjaro through the Shira Plateau, Barranco Valley and Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak.

Day 1

Lemosho Gate → Big Tree Camp

Rainforest

After breakfast in Moshi, drive toward the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro and continue to the Lemosho Gate, where registration and park formalities are completed.

Meet your mountain crew and begin your trek through the beautiful montane rainforest. The trail is surrounded by lush vegetation and the sounds of the forest.

Continue toward Big Tree Camp, where your support crew will have prepared your accommodation and evening meal.

Distance ~6 km
Hiking Time 3–4 hours
Elevation ~2,100 → 2,780 m
Day 2

Big Tree Camp → Shira 1 Camp

Moorland

Leave the rainforest behind as the trail gradually climbs into the heath and moorland zone.

The landscape becomes increasingly open, revealing wider views of the mountain and surrounding valleys.

Continue toward Shira 1 Camp on the western side of the spectacular Shira Plateau.

Your guides will maintain a comfortable, controlled pace to help your body begin adapting to the increasing altitude.

Distance ~8 km
Hiking Time 5–7 hours
Elevation 2,780 → 3,500 m
Day 3

Shira 1 → Shira 2 → Moir / Shira Plateau

Acclimatization

Today you continue across the spectacular Shira Plateau, one of the defining landscapes of the Lemosho Route.

The trail crosses open volcanic terrain with dramatic views toward Kibo, the summit cone of Mount Kilimanjaro.

Depending on trail conditions and the condition of the group, your guide may arrange a shorter acclimatization walk around the Shira Plateau before continuing toward the overnight camp.

Acclimatization Focus: This day is important for adapting to increasing altitude. Walk slowly, stay hydrated and communicate openly with your guide about how you are feeling.
Distance ~8–10 km
Hiking Time 5–7 hours
Elevation ~3,500 → 3,850 m
Day 4

Shira Plateau → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

Climb High, Sleep Low

Leave the Shira Plateau and begin one of the most important acclimatization sections of the Lemosho Route.

The trail climbs toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,630 metres above sea level. The high point of the day provides valuable exposure to altitude.

After reaching Lava Tower, descend toward Barranco Camp. This climb-high, sleep-low pattern is an important feature of the southern circuit.

Arrive at Barranco beneath the spectacular Barranco Wall and enjoy the dramatic mountain scenery.

Altitude Strategy: The route deliberately takes you higher during the day before descending to a lower sleeping altitude at Barranco.
Distance ~10–11 km
Hiking Time 7–9 hours
Elevation 3,850 → 4,630 → 3,960 m
Day 5

Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

High Camp

Begin the morning by tackling the famous Barranco Wall. Although impressive, the standard route involves trekking and scrambling rather than technical rock climbing.

Continue through the high-altitude valleys toward Karanga before climbing higher toward Barafu Camp, the final high camp.

At Barafu, enjoy an early meal and receive your final summit briefing from your mountain guide.

Prepare your summit clothing, headlamp, gloves, water and personal equipment before resting. The summit attempt normally begins around midnight.

Summit Preparation: Get as much rest as possible before the summit attempt. Your guide will determine the appropriate departure time according to conditions.
Distance ~9 km
Hiking Time 7–9 hours
Elevation 3,960 → 4,640 m
Day 6

Barafu → Uhuru Peak → Millennium Camp

Summit Day

The most demanding and rewarding day begins around midnight. Your guide leads the group slowly upward over volcanic scree toward the crater rim.

The climb continues toward Stella Point at approximately 5,739 metres.

From Stella Point, continue around the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak. At 5,895 metres, Uhuru Peak is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent.

Celebrate your achievement, take photographs and enjoy the extraordinary summit scenery before beginning the long descent.

Descend through Barafu and continue toward Millennium Camp for your final night on the mountain.

Summit Day Reminder: Summit success is never guaranteed because altitude affects every person differently. Your mountain guides continuously monitor your condition and prioritize safety.
Distance ~16–18 km
Hiking Time 12–15 hours
Elevation 4,640 → 5,895 → 3,820 m
