About The Trek

7-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb via Lemosho Route

A scenic and carefully planned Kilimanjaro trekking itinerary designed to combine spectacular landscapes, progressive altitude gain and a memorable summit attempt.

The 7-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Climb begins on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro and offers an extraordinary journey through several ecological zones. It is particularly appreciated for its scenic landscapes, quieter beginning and expansive views across the mountain.

The route begins near Lemosho Gate, where the trail enters the lush montane rainforest. As you climb higher, the vegetation gradually changes to heath and moorland before opening onto the dramatic Shira Plateau.

From the Shira Plateau, the route joins Kilimanjaro's southern circuit. The journey continues toward Lava Tower before descending toward Barranco Camp. This climb-high, sleep-lower section is an important part of the route's acclimatization strategy.

The trail then continues through the spectacular Barranco Valley, over the famous Barranco Wall and toward Karanga Camp before reaching Barafu Camp, the launch point for the summit attempt.

The summit attempt begins during the night. From Barafu, trekkers ascend toward Stella Point and then continue around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 metres.

Why Choose Lemosho?

  • One of Kilimanjaro's most scenic approaches
  • Beautiful western-side landscapes
  • Spectacular Shira Plateau scenery
  • Diverse vegetation and ecological zones
  • Valuable climb-high, sleep-lower sections
  • Dramatic Barranco Wall experience
  • Progressive approach toward Barafu Camp
  • Opportunity to stand at Uhuru Peak
Day-by-Day Trekking Plan

7-Day Lemosho Route Itinerary

Follow the complete day-by-day Mount Kilimanjaro trekking itinerary from Lemosho Gate through the rainforest, Shira Plateau, Barranco Valley and Barafu Camp to the summit of Uhuru Peak.

Day 1

Lemosho Gate → Big Tree Camp

Rainforest

After breakfast, your KCTE team drives from Moshi toward the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. After completing registration procedures at Lemosho Gate, your trek begins through the beautiful montane rainforest.

The trail passes beneath a dense canopy of ancient trees with opportunities to observe birds and other forest life. Your guide will establish a comfortable, steady pace as you begin gaining altitude.

Continue toward Big Tree Camp, where your mountain crew will have prepared your campsite. Enjoy dinner and your first night on the mountain.

Start Lemosho Gate
Finish Big Tree Camp
Zone Rainforest
Camp Big Tree Camp
Day 2

Big Tree Camp → Shira 1 Camp

Moorland

Leave the rainforest behind as the trail climbs into the heath and moorland zone. The forest gradually becomes more open, revealing broader views of the surrounding landscape.

The trail continues toward Shira 1 Camp, located on the western section of the Shira Plateau. The changing vegetation and increasingly dramatic mountain scenery make this one of the most memorable stages of the Lemosho Route.

After arriving at camp, enjoy a warm meal, relax and allow your body to continue adapting to the increasing altitude.

Start Big Tree Camp
Finish Shira 1 Camp
Zone Heath / Moorland
Camp Shira 1 Camp
Day 3

Shira 1 → Shira 2 → Moir Area

Acclimatization

Today you explore the spectacular Shira Plateau as the route continues eastward toward the higher reaches of the mountain.

The open landscape provides exceptional views across the plateau and toward the volcanic summit of Kibo. Depending on the operational route plan and conditions, the day can include an acclimatization excursion toward the Moir area before returning or continuing to the designated camp.

The purpose of today's profile is to gain elevation gradually while allowing your body additional time to adapt. Your KCTE guide will monitor your condition throughout the day.

Camp Shira 2 / Moir Area
Day 4

Shira Plateau → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

Climb High • Sleep Low

This is one of the most important acclimatization days on the Lemosho Route. Leave the Shira Plateau and continue toward the Lava Tower area, gaining substantial elevation during the day.

After reaching the high point around Lava Tower, the trail descends toward the spectacular Barranco Valley. This climb-high, sleep-lower pattern gives your body an opportunity to adjust to higher altitude.

Arrive at Barranco Camp with dramatic views of the Barranco Wall and Kibo. Your mountain crew will prepare dinner while you rest and recover.

High Point Lava Tower
Finish Barranco Camp
Camp Barranco Camp
Day 5

Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

Barranco Wall

After breakfast, begin the day with the famous Barranco Wall. Although the wall appears imposing from camp, the standard route involves trekking and scrambling rather than technical rock climbing.

Your experienced KCTE guide will assist you through the more challenging sections. Once above the wall, continue across a series of ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp.

The landscape becomes increasingly barren and alpine as you approach the upper slopes of Kilimanjaro. The afternoon provides valuable time to rest before the final approach to Barafu.

Start Barranco Camp
Highlight Barranco Wall
Finish Karanga Camp
Zone Alpine Desert
Day 6

Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

Summit Preparation

Today's trek takes you from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp, the principal base for your summit attempt.

The trail climbs through increasingly stark alpine terrain. As you approach Barafu, the vegetation disappears and the landscape becomes dominated by volcanic rock and high-altitude desert.

At camp, your guide will conduct a detailed summit briefing and check your equipment. Eat an early dinner and rest as much as possible because the summit attempt begins around midnight.

Start Karanga Camp
Finish Barafu Camp
Zone Alpine Desert
Camp Barafu Camp
Day 7

Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp

Summit Day • 5,895m

The summit attempt begins during the night. Leave Barafu Camp around midnight and begin the demanding ascent toward Stella Point on the crater rim.

The climb is slow and steady. Your guide will set a controlled pace designed to conserve energy while monitoring your condition at high altitude.

From Stella Point, continue around the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 metres and the highest point on the African continent.

After celebrating your summit achievement, begin the long descent toward Barafu for a short rest before continuing down the southern slopes to Mweka Camp.
