About The Trek

7-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb via Machame Route

A scenic and carefully paced Kilimanjaro trekking itinerary designed to combine spectacular landscapes, progressive altitude gain and a memorable summit attempt.

The 7-Day Machame Route Kilimanjaro Climb is one of the most popular ways to experience Mount Kilimanjaro. Often called the "Whiskey Route", Machame is known for its dramatic scenery, varied landscapes and rewarding trekking experience.

The route begins at Machame Gate on the southern side of Kilimanjaro. The trail climbs through lush rainforest before entering the heath and moorland zone around Machame Camp and Shira Plateau.

One of the major advantages of the Machame Route is its acclimatization profile. After crossing the Shira Plateau, trekkers climb toward the Lava Tower area before descending toward Barranco Camp. This classic "climb high, sleep low" pattern gives the body an opportunity to adjust progressively to altitude.

The journey continues through the spectacular Barranco Valley, over the famous Barranco Wall and toward Karanga Camp before reaching Barafu Camp, the launch point for the summit attempt.

The summit day begins around midnight. Under the guidance of your experienced mountain team, ascend toward Stella Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 metres.

Why Choose Machame?

  • One of Kilimanjaro's most scenic routes
  • Diverse landscapes and vegetation zones
  • Excellent "climb high, sleep low" profile
  • Spectacular Shira Plateau scenery
  • Famous Barranco Wall experience
  • Progressive acclimatization
  • Dramatic summit approach through Barafu
  • Opportunity to stand at Uhuru Peak
Day-by-Day Trekking Plan

7-Day Machame Route Itinerary

Follow the complete day-by-day Mount Kilimanjaro trekking itinerary from Machame Gate through the rainforest, Shira Plateau, Barranco Valley and Barafu Camp to the summit of Uhuru Peak.

Day 1

Machame Gate → Machame Camp

Rainforest

After breakfast in Moshi, drive to Machame Gate, where you will complete registration and park entry procedures. Meet your mountain crew and begin your Kilimanjaro adventure.

The trail winds upward through the lush montane rainforest. The forest is rich in vegetation and birdlife, and the cool, shaded environment provides a beautiful introduction to the climb.

Continue at a comfortable pace toward Machame Camp. After arriving, settle into camp, enjoy dinner and rest for the night.

Distance ~11 km
Hiking Time 5–7 hours
Elevation 1,800 → 3,000 m
Camp Machame Camp
Day 2

Machame Camp → Shira Camp

Moorland

Leave the rainforest behind as the trail climbs into the heath and moorland zone. The vegetation becomes shorter and the surrounding views begin to open dramatically.

The trail becomes steeper as you approach the Shira Plateau. On clear days, you may enjoy impressive views toward Kibo and the surrounding mountain landscape.

Arrive at Shira Camp and enjoy dinner before resting at altitude.

Acclimatization Tip: Walk slowly, stay hydrated and avoid rushing. Your body is beginning to adapt to the increasing altitude.
Distance ~9 km
Hiking Time 4–6 hours
Elevation 3,000 → 3,840 m
Camp Shira Camp
Day 3

Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp

Acclimatization

Today is one of the most important acclimatization days on the Machame Route. Leave Shira Camp and cross the high-altitude landscape toward the Lava Tower area.

You will gain considerable elevation during the day before descending toward Barranco. This follows the classic "climb high, sleep low" principle.

The landscape becomes increasingly dramatic, with volcanic rock formations and sweeping views across Kilimanjaro's upper slopes.

Descend toward the spectacular Barranco Valley and arrive at Barranco Camp in the afternoon.

Why this day matters: Gaining altitude during the day and descending to sleep lower provides an important acclimatization stimulus before the higher stages of the trek.
Distance ~12 km
Hiking Time 6–8 hours
Highest Point ~4,630 m
Camp Barranco Camp
Day 4

Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp

Barranco Wall

Wake to spectacular views of the Barranco Wall. After breakfast, begin the ascent of this famous section of the Machame Route.

Although the Barranco Wall looks imposing from camp, the route is a trekking scramble rather than technical rock climbing. Your guide will show you the safest and most comfortable line through the terrain.

After reaching the top of the wall, continue through a series of valleys and ridges toward Karanga Camp.

Arrive at camp in the afternoon and enjoy a well-earned rest while preparing for the higher elevations ahead.

Distance ~7 km
Hiking Time 4–5 hours
Elevation 3,960 → 4,035 m
Camp Karanga Camp
Day 5

Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp

Summit Base Camp

After breakfast, leave Karanga Camp and continue toward Barafu Camp, the high-altitude base from which the summit attempt will begin.

The vegetation becomes sparse as you climb through the alpine desert. The surrounding volcanic terrain becomes increasingly rugged and dramatic.

Arrive at Barafu Camp around midday or early afternoon. Your mountain team will prepare an early dinner while you rest and prepare your summit clothing and equipment.

Go to sleep early because the summit ascent will begin around midnight.

Summit Preparation: Hydrate well, organize your summit equipment, keep warm and take advantage of the available rest before the midnight ascent.
Distance ~6 km
Hiking Time 3–4 hours
Elevation 4,035 → 4,640 m
Camp Barafu Camp
Day 6

Barafu Camp → Uhuru Peak → Millennium Camp

Summit Day

Wake around midnight and begin the most demanding part of your Mount Kilimanjaro adventure. The ascent begins slowly over steep volcanic scree toward the crater rim.

Your guide will maintain a very slow, controlled pace as you climb toward Stella Point on the crater rim.

From Stella Point, continue around the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak. At 5,895 metres, Uhuru Peak is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent.

Celebrate your achievement and take photographs at the Roof of Africa before beginning the long descent.

Descend through Barafu Camp and continue toward Millennium Camp for your final night on the mountain.

Summit Day Reminder: Summit success is never guaranteed because altitude affects each person differently. Your guides will continuously assess your condition and prioritize your safety.
Distance ~16–18 km
Hiking Time 12–15 hours
Summit 5,895 m
Camp Millennium Camp
Day 7

Millennium Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi

Final Descent

Enjoy breakfast at Millennium Camp before beginning the final descent through the lush Kilimanjaro rainforest.

The trail gradually descends toward Mweka Gate. As you lose altitude, the forest becomes increasingly green and tropical.

At the gate, complete the park exit procedures and collect your Kilimanjaro summit certificate where applicable.

Meet your private vehicle and transfer back to Moshi for a well-deserved shower, rest and celebration at your hotel.

Distance ~10 km
Hiking Time 3–4 hours
Elevation 3,790 → 1,630 m
Finish Mweka Gate

Why is the Machame Route called the Whiskey Route?

What is the Barranco Wall?
The Barranco Wall is a dramatic rock and volcanic formation encountered on the Machame Route. Although it looks imposing, the standard trail involves trekking and scrambling rather than technical rock climbing. Experienced guides assist trekkers through the section.
