8-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Climb via Lemosho Route
A scenic, progressive and carefully planned Kilimanjaro trekking itinerary designed to give you more time on the mountain, excellent acclimatization opportunities and an unforgettable approach to Uhuru Peak.
The 8-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Climb is one of the most rewarding ways to experience Mount Kilimanjaro. The route approaches the mountain from the remote western side before crossing the spectacular Shira Plateau.
The first days take you through lush rainforest and into the high-altitude heath and moorland zone. As the route progresses, the landscape changes dramatically into open volcanic terrain and alpine desert.
One of the greatest advantages of the 8-day itinerary is the additional time available for acclimatization. The gradual ascent allows trekkers to adapt progressively while enjoying the changing landscapes of Kilimanjaro.
From the Shira Plateau, the trail continues toward Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp. This classic "climb high, sleep low" pattern is an important part of the route's acclimatization profile.
The trek then continues through the dramatic Barranco Valley, across the famous Barranco Wall, toward Karanga and finally Barafu Camp — the launch point for the summit attempt.
Summit night begins around midnight. Guided by your experienced mountain team, you ascend toward Stella Point and continue around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro at 5,895 metres.
Why Choose Lemosho?
- One of Kilimanjaro's most scenic routes
- Remote and quieter western approach
- Spectacular Shira Plateau scenery
- Excellent acclimatization profile
- Gradual altitude gain
- Diverse ecological zones
- Famous Barranco Wall experience
- More time to adapt before summit night
- Opportunity to stand at Uhuru Peak
8-Day Lemosho Route Itinerary
Follow the complete day-by-day Mount Kilimanjaro trekking itinerary from the western slopes through the rainforest, Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Valley and Barafu Camp before the summit of Uhuru Peak.
Lemosho Gate → Big Tree Camp
RainforestAfter breakfast in Moshi, drive toward the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro and complete registration formalities at Lemosho Gate.
The trek begins through beautiful montane rainforest. The trail is surrounded by dense vegetation, towering trees and the sounds of the forest as you gradually gain elevation.
Continue toward Big Tree Camp, also known as Mti Mkubwa Camp, where your mountain crew will have prepared your camp.
Big Tree Camp → Shira 1 Camp
HeathlandLeave the rainforest behind as the trail climbs into the heath and moorland zone. Vegetation becomes shorter and the views gradually open toward the western slopes of Kilimanjaro.
Continue upward through a changing landscape of giant heathers, volcanic terrain and open mountain scenery.
Arrive at Shira 1 Camp and enjoy your first views across the dramatic Shira Plateau.
Shira 1 Camp → Shira 2 Camp
AcclimatizationToday's trek takes you deeper across the spectacular Shira Plateau. The terrain becomes increasingly open, with broad views toward the summit and surrounding volcanic landscape.
Walk at a controlled pace while your body continues adapting to the increasing altitude. The relatively moderate trekking day provides valuable time for acclimatization.
Arrive at Shira 2 Camp and spend the afternoon resting, hydrating and enjoying the mountain scenery.
Shira 2 → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp
Climb High Sleep LowToday is one of the most important acclimatization days of the trek. Leave the Shira Plateau and begin climbing toward the high alpine desert surrounding Lava Tower.
The trail passes through increasingly rocky and barren terrain as you approach the 4,600-metre Lava Tower area. Your guide will maintain a slow and controlled pace.
After spending time at higher elevation, descend toward Barranco Camp. This classic "climb high, sleep low" pattern helps your body progressively adapt to altitude.
Arrive beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall and enjoy spectacular late-afternoon views.
Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp
Barranco WallWake beneath the impressive Barranco Wall. After breakfast, begin the ascent of this famous feature of the Lemosho Route.
Although the wall looks imposing from camp, the route is a trekking scramble rather than technical rock climbing. Your guide will help you find a comfortable and safe line through the terrain.
Continue across valleys and ridges toward Karanga Camp, gradually approaching the higher elevations of the mountain.
Arrive at camp in the afternoon and rest while preparing for the final approach to Barafu.
Karanga Camp → Barafu Camp
Summit BaseAfter breakfast, begin the final approach toward Barafu Camp, the high-altitude base camp for the summit attempt.
The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you enter the alpine desert zone. The trail climbs steadily toward the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro.
Arrive at Barafu Camp and receive a detailed briefing from your mountain guides about the summit attempt.
Enjoy an early dinner and rest as much as possible. Your summit departure will normally begin around midnight.
Barafu → Uhuru Peak → Mweka Camp
Summit DayThis is the defining day of your Kilimanjaro adventure. Wake around midnight, have a light meal and begin the summit ascent under the stars.
The climb toward Stella Point is slow and demanding. Your guides will maintain a steady pace while monitoring your condition and altitude response.
From Stella Point, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak. At 5,895 metres, Uhuru Peak is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent.
After celebrating your achievement and taking photographs, begin the descent toward Mweka Camp through the changing alpine and upper-mountain landscape.
Mweka Camp → Mweka Gate → Moshi
DescentAfter breakfast, begin the final descent through the lush montane forest toward Mweka Gate.
As the trail descends, the vegetation becomes increasingly green and dense, marking the return from the high mountain environment.
At Mweka Gate, complete the park exit formalities and receive your summit certificates where applicable.
Your private KCTE vehicle will meet you for the transfer back to your hotel in Moshi, where you can enjoy a well-earned shower, comfortable accommodation and a relaxing evening.
The 8-Day Lemosho Altitude Journey
The longer Lemosho itinerary provides a progressive altitude profile with several opportunities to adapt before the summit attempt. Actual altitude response varies between individuals, so your mountain team will monitor you throughout the trek.
