6 Days Mount Climbing on Marangu Route with Kilimanjaro Centre for Trekking and Ecotourism (KCTE)

Day 0: Arrival in Tanzania
Welcome to Tanzania! Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, our KCTE representative will warmly greet you and transfer you to your chosen accommodation in Moshi. Take this day to relax and acclimatize to the African altitude and climate. Your pre-climb briefing will occur in the evening, where you will meet your guides and fellow climbers. Day 1: From Moshi to Mandara Hut

  • Elevation: 1,860 m to 2,705 m
  • Distance: 8 km
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest

Rise early and after breakfast, we begin our journey from Moshi to Marangu Gate. Here you will complete the necessary park paperwork before starting your trek. The initial stage of your hike takes you through lush rainforests, where the canopy overhead shelters you and the chirping of exotic birds fills the air. This trail is well-defined and often muddy, so sturdy boots are a necessity. After several hours, you'll reach Mandara Hut, where you can relax, enjoy dinner, and overnight in your first mountain hut.

Day 2: From Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

  • Elevation: 2,705 m to 3,720 m
  • Distance: 12 km
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

Fuel up with a hearty breakfast before on today's trek, which takes you out of the rainforest and into the rolling alpine meadow. This dramatic change in the landscape offers panoramic views of the surrounding area with glimpses of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The terrain to shrubs and grasses as you ascend. Tonight, you'll rest at Horombo Hut, where you can enjoy a spectacular sunset from 3,720 meters above sea level.

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

  • Elevation: 3,720 m
  • Walking Time: 4-5 hours (optional hike)

Today is crucial for acclimatization. You will have the option to take a trek towards Mawenzi Ridge, gaining around 300 meters before descending back to Horombo Hut. This helps your body adjust to higher altitudes, increasing your chance of a successful summit. Enjoy the unique vegetation and the vast landscapes of the moorland zone.

Day 4: From Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

  • Elevation: 3,720 m to 4,703 m
  • Distance: 10 km
  • Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

The journey from Horombo to Kibo crosses the lunar-like landscape of the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. This barren, rocky path may be challenging, but it offers otherworldly views and a sense of isolation in the wilderness. Once at Kibo Hut, rest and prepare for your night-time summit attempt.

Day 5: From Kibo Hut to and down to Horombo Hut

  • Elevation: 4,703 m to 5,895 m (summit) and down to 3,720 m
  • Distance: 4 km up, 14 km down
  • Hiking Time: 12-15 hours
  • Habitat: Arctic

An early start around midnight involves steep climbing over loose volcanic scree with some well-graded zigzags and a gradual plateau as you approach the summit. Reaching Uhuru , the summit of Kilimanjaro, offers an incredible sense of achievement. Enjoy the sunrise from the highest point in Africa before descending to Horombo Hut for your overnight rest.

Day 6: From Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate – Return to Moshi

  • Elevation: 3,720 m to 1,860 m
  • Distance: 18 km
  • Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
  • Habitat: Rainforest

The final day on the mountain takes you back through the moorland to the Mandara Hut and then into the rainforest to Marangu Gate. Here, our KCTE vehicles will be waiting to take you back to your hotel in Moshi, where a warm shower and a celebratory dinner await.

Departure Day: Moshi to Kilimanjaro International Airport
After a restful night, we will transport you from the hotel to Kilimanjaro International Airport. As you board your flight, you'll carry with you the memories of conquering the roof of Africa.
